Marketing Outrageously Essay
The author discusses how in the early 1980s the Portland Trail Blazers tried to move their radio broadcasting of games ââ¬Å"in-house. â⬠While doing this they sought out a fast food chain to sell its radio commercials to. McDonaldââ¬â¢s, Burger King and Wendyââ¬â¢s all declined so they decided to go for a more local chain? Burgerville. The partner ship turned to be quite profitable for both as the ââ¬Å"Blazer Mealâ⬠was a big hit for Burgerville and it allowed them to build more stores. The Trail Blazers made $900,000 with the business adventure. He goes on to talk about how AOL used an outrageous marketing strategy of sending out 250 million AOL computer disks into homes across America with a free month trial of the online service. The disks were given away everywhere and at all kinds of places. This shot them into the number one slot without CompuServe and Prodigy being able to realize it. He noted that before they took such a risk they tested their product in a smaller group of people before taking it to the extreme level they did. When he was in New Jersey with the Nets he tried the fast food sponsorship market again but with White Castle after being told McDonaldââ¬â¢s would never associate themselves with the Nets. A few years past by and McDonaldââ¬â¢s came calling about getting the same deal that White Castle had and the author told them they would have to wait and be the option if White Castle chose not to renew the promotion. The same also worked when he took the idea with him to Sacramento working as a consultant for the Kings. He just told the regional advisor in Sacramento to call the one in New Jersey and ask him about the promotion working. Chapter 7: Horse of Opportunity Ground rule #7: When a rare big opportunity comes along and you canââ¬â¢t test it, fly without a net. The author talks about the big risk that GardenBurger took. They decided to air just one thirty second commercial during the Seinfeld finale. The ââ¬Å"Big Bangâ⬠sent out waves to the vegetarian population and led to GardenBurger increasing monthly sales by 411 percent along with many other increases in a 3 month span. The idea that was considered to be foolish paid off for the upstart company. Chapter 8: New as a Way of Life Ground rule #8: Take and experiment and make it part of your life. Do it again. The author brings up how the reading of the book Veeck as in Wreck by Bill Veeck is always a refreshing tool for his marketing ideas. He recalls one time when he re-read the book that he liked Veeckââ¬â¢s idea of the midget that he used to take an at bat during a baseball game. He decided to incorporate that into his basketball team the Buffalo Braves, but he chose to make the player a bit taller. Spoelstra went after the tallest man in the world who was nine feet three inches tall. The head coach at the time; Cotton Fitzsimmions loved the idea and was on board but would later find out that the man they were looking for had died. It was still a good way to be thinking in a way that others would not be. He talks about regular conversations with Kunitake Ando who is the president of Sony. Ando regularly talks about inventing new products even if they only last for a short time. From there the author goes on to talk about inventing new ways to market a product: A. It doesnââ¬â¢t take too much time B. It can work even better than the old ideas C. It is possible; there are always new ways you havenââ¬â¢t thought of yet He then gives other examples from movies and other industries that they use for their different ideas to expand to other areas of the market in outrageous ways that some companies would not consider using to market their movie or product.

Post-Compulsory Education Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
Post-Compulsory Education - Essay Example It was the emphasis upon further education providing a preparation for jobs which underpinned the new vocationalism of the 1980s. However, in more recent years, the provision of a 'vocational education' has come to be recognised as a more complex matter than that of simply training students in job-specific skills. While it is true to say that General, Liberal and Social Studies appendages to post -war vocational courses were an attempt to provide students with a wider educational base to their studies, it was the BTEC curriculum introduced from the early 1980s which took the first significant steps towards a preparation for work within a broader concept of vocational education. The development of TVEI as an enhancement curriculum, of generic and core skills, and of modular course structures such as GNVQ can be seen as further evidence of some general shift towards a broader, re-focused vocationalism. The reasons behind these shifts are themselves interesting and result from analyses of the changing needs of the economy, the labour market and, in particular, the nature of work. Post -Fordist and other analyses of current and prospective transformations in Western societies have stressed a requirement for some form of 'flexible' knowledge worker within collaborative, hightrust, high-skill, work relations (Brown and Lauder, 1991) and it is with some, albeit hasty and superficial, appreciation of these requirements that curriculum development has been stimulated. I say hasty and superficial because, a high degree of uncertainty still surrounds the extent of, the directions of, and the full implications of the developments anticipated in the post -Fordist analysis. Indeed, evidence of the anticipated flatter, leaner, hierarchies is not in great abundance, at least in Britain. Moreover, the surface features of post -Fordism are largely indistinguishable from those of the 'enterprise c ulture' and, where curriculum developments do not address fundamental differences between the two, their unresolved contradictions are carried forward into course planning. 'Student-centred learning', 'autonomy', 'entitlement', 'empowerment', 'democracy' and 'citizenship', which figure prominently in recent curriculum developments, are examples of concepts in popular use in post-compulsory education whose rhetorical value is their power to legitimise and compel common assent to curriculum innovations but whose more sinister function is to obscure the need for critical examination of those innovations (Avis, 1993:13-14). Nonetheless, many of the reforms to have taken place in post-compulsory education since the early 1990s, despite the problematic nature of their underlying evidence and logic, reflect a clear and visible attempt to shift from a narrowly focused 'preparation for work' towards some notion of preparation 'for life', 'for citizenship', 'for multi-skilled work' and 'for collaborative work relationships'. While the effects of such shifts are most evident in full-time vocational courses, and to some extent in A-level programmes, they have received little or no recognition in NVQ levels 1, 2 and 3. Consequently, the once clear purpose of vocational education has become bifurcated into 'vocational education' based in some broader concepts of vocation and preparation and 'occupational training' whose primary concern is to equip learners with skills for jobs. We can say that

What Would Benjamin Franklin's Say, and What Do You Say Educational Essay
What Would Benjamin Franklin's Say, and What Do You Say Educational curriculum - Essay Example While the United States still retains the worldââ¬â¢s most elite university system, the nation has fallen behind in primary and secondary education. Increasingly, foreign nations have moved passed the country in the highly critical areas of math and science. For centuries theorists have considered the best way to structure educational curriculum to meet changing needs. One prominent educational theorist was Benjamin Franklin. This essay considers Franklinââ¬â¢s insights on education and then presents my perspectives on the most appropriate educational curriculum. Benjamin Franklin prominently examined the most appropriate education in his considerations for the development of an academy in Pennsylvania. From an overarching perspective, Franklin considers that education should function to prepare students for their entrance into the world ("Archives," 2012). Franklin goes on to state that, ââ¬Å"if Men â⬠¦catch such a Taste for cultivating Flowers, Planting, Grafting, Inocu latingâ⬠¦why may not we expect they should acquire a Relish for that more useful Culture of young Mindsâ⬠("Archives," 2012). This is a notable statement as it indicates that while Franklin recognizes hobbies are important elements, it is essential that educational curriculum instruction in ââ¬Ëusefulââ¬â¢ skills. ancient customs and morality. ... reat amount of emerging research has demonstrated that Montessori school out-perform traditional modes of education ("Research shows benefits," 2006). I believe that one of the major shortcomings of modern educational reform has been an illusionary belief that all students share the same innate abilities. Through adopting Montessori approaches to education at the primary level teachers, parents, and school systems will better be able to determine the specific interests and abilities the student has and is drawn to. This understanding, rather than the artificial and inflexible public curriculum, can then inform the individualââ¬â¢s further educational experience. After primary education further changes need to be made to the current curriculum in the secondary level. The 21st century has increasingly become integrated with the Internet and social networking. Many schools have already recognized the importance of integrating social networking platforms such as Facebook, Ning, and Tw itter into the regular curriculum (Davis, 2010). I believe that that the Information Age has necessitated that educational curriculum assume a number of profound changes. During Franklinââ¬â¢s time, as evidenced by his strong emphasis on acculturation through instruction in history and ancient customs, there was a great importance for content instruction. Today with the Internetââ¬â¢s emergence as a repository of culture it has become unrealistic to assume that students simply learn a body of history. Instead I believe that secondary curriculum should increasingly focus on instructing students in the means of navigating this complex cultural landscape. During Franklinââ¬â¢s time the primary modes of cultural dissemination were through books. The 20th century witnessed the emergence of film,

Ruth Frankenberg Reseach Paper Research Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Ruth Frankenberg Reseach - Research Paper Example We begin to get a glimpse of Frankenbergââ¬â¢s life in her first book and perhaps the book which she is known the most for, ââ¬Å"White Women, Race Matters: The Social Construction of Whitenessâ⬠, which was published in 1993. It is telling that Frankenberg begins with the admission that she had at first considered race far removed from her work as a Marxist Feminist. To quote her, ââ¬Å"I saw racism as entirely external to me, a characteristic of extremists or of the British State, but not a part of what made me or what shaped my activism.â⬠(1993: 53). Her race consciousness was triggered by the observation that unlike those she campaigned in the All-Cambridge campaigns who were whites like her, those she worked alongside in the feminist movement in the United States were ââ¬Å"lesbian women of color and white working class womenâ⬠(1993: 54) ââ¬â bringing forth a heterogeneity that demonstrated the unities and linked experiences of women from all over. Blac k writers like Patricia Collins (1995) saw the import and contribution of this kind of literature. B. Choosing Career From this early experience, Frankenberg developed a critical perspective towards race and saw whiteness as a category that bestows ââ¬Å"structural advantageâ⬠and ââ¬Å"privilegeâ⬠(55) and as a ââ¬Å"place from which to look at oneself, others and society.â⬠In her work at looking at white womenââ¬â¢s childhoods, Frankenberg saw how race was used as an organizing device to bestow or deny privilege; to include or exclude. In a way, therefore, it becomes inextricable with class ââ¬â particularly when race becomes the determinant of conferring economic benefit. The criticism that "'whites' in the United States historically have been extraordinarily good at not looking inwardâ⬠(Durso, 2002) appears to be a valid one. C. First Book Ruth Frankenberg then takes off her discourse in her first book, ââ¬Å"White Women, Race Matters: The Social Construction of Whitenessâ⬠where she began with the provocative observation that ââ¬Å"any system of differentiation shapes those upon whom it bestows privilege as well as those it oppresses.â⬠(Frankenberg: 1993: 131). This is a critical starting point in beginning to understand the complex ways with which the color of oneââ¬â¢s skin ââ¬â whiteness ââ¬â impacts on race, gender, and class. It can therefore be seen that Frankenberg is critical of, rather than apologetic for, white racism and her work in fact is a scathing indictment of the structures of dominance that have resulted from skin color differentiations. Looking deeper and unpacking her work more, Frankenberg explores the themes of race, gender and class vis a vis whiteness not as independent from each other, but as overlapping structures of oppression and exploitation that must be addressed and resisted together. She surfaces, to paraphrase May (1999:4) the hegemonic processes that lead to the univ ersalization and normalization of whiteness and the ââ¬Å"otheringâ⬠of non-whiteness. Frankenbergââ¬â¢s critical ââ¬â as opposed to apologetic ââ¬â perspective on race and whiteness becomes even more apparent when she reveals how the subjects of her study, the white middle-class women who she had asked to describe their childhoods, had managed to render invisible the black people who they had lived with or encountered within their communities. And when these black people are summoned to memory, it is always in the

Should the outside world intervene to help the victims of violence in Research Paper - 2
Should the outside world intervene to help the victims of violence in Syria - Research Paper Example CON: No the outside world should not intervene to help the victims of violence in Syria because: 1. Supporting Syria militarily violates the policy of non-military support 2. Supporting the rebels could lead to militarization of radical rebels within Syrian rebel group 3. Supporting Syria militarily will set a bad precedence, which may prompt the upsurge of rebel groups in many countries. 4. Supporting the Syrian rebels would amount to infringing on the sovereignty of the country. 5. The variation in the support, where some countries support the Syrian government and others support the Rebels may build a rivalry amongst other countries, which is a threat to world peace. The conflict in Syria is among the most deadly in the entire world. Over 70,000 people are dead since peaceful protests turned into a bloody revolution (Foreign Policy, n.p.). Many of these casualties are innocent men, women and children. They are not combatants of any sort but have been victimized by the regime of Ba shar al Assad in an effort to suppress the uprising. As the Syrian conflict drags on, it is becoming increasingly clear that something must be done to end the bloodshed and arrive at an agreement between all of the parties involved in the conflict. Currently the international community and Syrians engaged in the battle are wondering what the best way to end this conflict is. I believe strongly that there are several good reasons the outside world should intervene to help the victims of violence in Syria. The first reason the outside world should intervene in Syria is the fact that innocent lives are being destroyed by a cruel, authoritarianregime. I believe that the free and powerful nations of the world have the duty to help spread the ideals of freedom and justice to all people. Sometimes this requires free nations to support revolutions that are violent and messy from a diplomatic perspective. Many innocent people are dying in Syria at the hands of a dictator (Innocent Victims, n .p.). This alone should be enough reason to get involved. One of the most important things that need to be done is to care for the people displaced to Jordan, Turkey and Iraq (Inside, n.p.). These refugees need to be housed, fed and clothed. This is the humane thing to do. The United States has given more money towards this effort than any other nation on earth. This is commendable, but my feeling is more can be done. I believe that the United States and the powerful nations of Western Europe and Asia that are free and democratic should support the rebels in Syria with advanced training, weapons and military personnel from their own armies (Foreign Policy, n.p.). A second reason for full military engagement in the Syrian uprising centers on the fact, it is the duty of all nations to safeguard human rights, despite no matter where they are being violated. Bashar al Assad does not understand anything other than brute force. His father and grandfather both suppressed uprisings in the p ast with brutal tactics (South, 22). The outside world should intervene to show him that human rights are fundamental, and thus he cannot brutalize his own people, because the world upholds human rights with a high esteem, and it is willing to help. A peaceful and stable Syria is the first step towards this goal (Marcus, n.p.). Another reason that the world should help to end the conflict in Syria by becoming more engaged is the fact that

NO TEXTING ON YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING Essay
NO TEXTING ON YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING - Essay Example Such interactions bear consequential instances if they are not used in a responsible manner. Texting messages while driving has been an on-going debate since number of years. The school of thought that disagrees with texting messages while driving consider it so severe that they want the action to be given the status of a crime while others take donââ¬â¢t give much importance to the issue. In the light of the adverse effects of texting while driving, it should be banned to promote road safety for the people. 2. Driving While Texting Driving is a task that requires utmost attention and concentration of the driver. Quick reflexes are often needed to keep safe from any accident whereas texting messages causes the occupation of oneââ¬â¢s hand and mind. Caird, Scialfa, Ho and Smiley (2005) stated that texting messages while driving impairs the reflexes and affects the reaction time of the individual thereby making it difficult to regain control of the vehicle if an unforeseen incide nt arises. Foundation for Traffic Safety (2009) conducted a survey that concluded that 9 out of 10 drivers consider texting messages as a danger to themselves and others on the road. It is often argued that the activity of text messaging has been presumed to be dangerous at an unrealistic level since there are numerous other activities that cause distraction and makes the driver lose focus, for example loud music, attractive billboards and advertisements etc. The argument stands partially valid since the mentioned factors also prove to be a hindrance for a driver. However, none of these mentioned factors compel the drivers to use his hands, alongside looking at the small screen to read the text. The fear of being ceased by the traffic police often makes the driver keep the phone lower that requires him to bend his head down (off the road) to read the message. Needless to say, that getting oneââ¬â¢s head off the road even for a few seconds can result in life altering situations. A gency Group (2011) reported that around 5,500 people lost their lives and 0.5 million got severely injured in 2009 in different accidents due to distracted individuals driving cars. Magid (2009) provided useful information about the level of distractedness that becomes apparent from driving while text messaging; such drivers are recorded to depart from their lanes 10 times more than a regular driver. The advocators argue that a skilled driver can never be affected with such distractions and is able to possess control of the car in all situations even if he is texting. Firstly, some drivers might be skilled enough to handle multitasking while driving but their texting gives a wrong message to the youngsters who are more active in this activity. Magid (2009) quoted some other research findings; 46 % of the teenagers accept the fact that they text while driving. Secondly, a skilled driver might have full control of the car but he cannot judge the level of control that is possessed by s ome other driver (who might be texting) on the road that might cause turbulence on the road for everyone else. Road safety can only be achieved if all the drivers drive their cars safely, rather than just a few. 3. Conclusion Texting while driving is a dangerous activity that can prove to have consequential factors for others, as well as oneself. The process of texting while driving reduces the reaction time of an individual and affects the individual to make decisions instantly. The advocators of
